Is it time to start talking about SPIEL Essen 25? Perhaps so because several publishers have already submitted titles to the BGG database that are tagged as debuting at that show in Essen, Germany this October.

One such announcement is for Abroad, a design from Rodrigo Rego, Danilo Valente, and Austrian publisher 1 More Time Games that will debut in English and German in October 2025.

Says company developer and co-owner Julian Steindorfer, "Abroad is a tableau builder in the spirit of Terraforming Mars, Wingspan, and Ark Nova, but lighter in terms of complexity, and with a more interactive approach. The theme about traveling Europe gets players to share where they were or want to go to next."

Here's an overview of this 1-5 player game:
You've always wanted to travel the world, and now you have a chance to do it for a living! A position has opened up at the most prestigious travel guide publisher, and you have four weeks in Europe to show that you are the right person for the job. Visit stunning locations, meet locals, get insider tips, collect postcards from famous attractions, and maybe even visit a festival on weekends or fulfill an adventure worthy of a bucket list.

Europe awaits you in Abroad, and you need to figure out how you're going to make the most of the opportunity. You'll start with a hand of seven location cards from a deck of 240, as well as a postcard with an endgame goal. Start in your choice of Europe's ten regions.

The game lasts four rounds, with each round consisting of seven days. Take turns in a round until you have spent all of your days. On a turn, you can stay where you are, or travel to a new location by plane (by spending money) or by train (be spending energy), then take one of four activities:

— Write about the location, spending a day and three cards to earn 4€.
— Rest, spending a day and three cards to earn 2 energy.
— Plan, spending a day to draw three cards.
— Carry out an activity, spending as many days as listed on a card in your hand matching your region, then adding that card to your calendar on the final day and carrying out its effects. (If you spend excitement, you can reduce the number of days spent. Do more faster!)

Each location card shows a region, days required, 1-4 tags that relate to card powers and bucket list tokens, an effect, and a "weekday special" effect that happens only if played on the matching day.

When you spend days for an activity, you remove those day tokens from your calendar and place them in your current region. Ideally you can use effects to flip them over to show you've picked up an insider tip for that region. If you have local tokens in your reserve, you can place a local in the region to get a local bonus. If you've completed the requirements for a bucket list token in that region, claim it. If you spent Saturday or Sunday in a region with a festival, you can pay the costs of the festival to claim it and use its ability for the remainder of the game.

After everyone has spent all their days, you score each region for the week, with the player who has the most insider tips for that region earning 2-3 points; the player with the secondmost tips earns 1 point, with ties being broken by whoever spent the most days in the region.

End the round by refreshing festivals and gaining your income in money, energy, excitement, and locals, with you being able to boost these values during play, and with each boost giving you a one-shot bonus item.

After four rounds, score all your postcards based on whether you met their primary or secondary goal, then see who has logged the most points as evidence of their awesome travel skills.

For the solo game of Abroad, you compete against a bot that always has three location cards in a row that determine where it travels next, although you spend money or energy to discard its locations and send it elsewhere.
