Best for Dark Spots: Wisp Firm Up! Wrinkle Cream

Wisp

Firm Up! Wrinkle Cream

Why we love it: Wisp may be best known for sexual wellness, but its tretinoin cream is a hit for tackling discoloration and dark spots. The Firm Up! Wrinkle Cream formula pairs tretinoin (at a balanced 0.04% strength) with two powerhouse ingredients: Azelaic acid, which fights acne-causing bacteria while brightening uneven skin tone, and niacinamide, a go-to for smoothing and fading dark spots. It’s a well-rounded option for anyone looking to even out their complexion while getting the benefits of a prescription-strength retinoid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most effective tretinoin?

The most effective tretinoin isn’t just about choosing the highest strength—it’s all about finding what works for your skin. "The effectiveness of tretinoin depends on three main factors: the concentration, the formula, and your skin type,” says Dr. Shirazi. Prescription tretinoin typically comes in strengths between 0.02% to 0.1%, with higher concentrations being more potent leading to quicker results, but also potentially causing more irritation, she explains.

But remember, more potent doesn’t always equate to better effectiveness. “The higher the concentration, the stronger it is, but stronger does not mean better—the tradeoff is more redness and irritation,” says board-certified dermatologist Asmi Berry, MD. The trick is to choose a formula that plays well with your skin’s needs, balancing potency and comfort for the best outcome.

Is 0.05% tretinoin stronger than 1% retinol?

"The 0.05% tretinoin is much stronger than 1% retinol,” says Dr. Berry, adding that this is because tretinoin is already in its active form (i.e., retinoic acid), so it works immediately when applied to the skin. “Retinol must be converted to retinoic acid in the skin, which means it's weaker and takes longer to see results compared to tretinoin." Translation? Essentially, tretinoin is more potent because it doesn’t require the conversion process, delivering faster and more noticeable results. While 1% retinol might sound stronger, it won’t have the same immediate effects as tretinoin, especially for more significant concerns like fine lines and discoloration.

Can I use 0.1% tretinoin every day?

A 0.1% tretinoin formula is the strongest potency available, so incorporating it into your skincare routine should be done gradually over time. In most cases, you’ll have worked your way up, starting at a low dose. Dr. Hibler says that he encourages his patients to try to use tretinoin every day because it’s incredibly effective when used consistently. But Dr. Shirazi suggests easing into it with a method called Retinol Staging if you’ve just started a 0.1% concentration, you’re going up on any dose, or you’re just beginning tretinoin in general.
