Have you spent far too much time styling your hair just to achieve a quick and simple ponytail? Or have you given up on ponytails entirely?

Having thin hair can be both a blessing and a curse (or both, at the same time). It’s usually easy to work with and doesn’t often get tangled, but DEAR GOD the ponytail envy is real. Seriously.

We LOVE a good ponytail. A woman with a ponytail is a woman with CONFIDENCE. She’s giving effortlessly beautiful. She’s got things to do and people to see. Everyone she meets wants to be her. And a nice, slick ponytail gives chic and put-together time and time again.

For those of us rocking fine hair, our effortlessly beautiful ponytail isn’t quite effortless. But, after figuring out some hacks we can tell you that a gorgeous ponytail with thin hair is totally doable.

Check out some of the best ponytail tips and tricks out there below.

8 Ponytail Hacks for Thin Hair

Try a single hair tie trick.

There are two ways to use a single hair tie for a thicker-looking ponytail:

Method 1:

+ Pull your hair together for a ponytail of your desired height.

+ Begin wrapping your hair elastic around your ponytail, but stop before your last loop.

+ Divide your ponytail into two sections (top and bottom).

Wrap the last loop around only the bottom section. The top section will fall over the elastic and the lower section, making the ponytail appear fuller!

Method 2:

+ Pull your hair together for a ponytail of your desired height.

+ Begin wrapping your hair elastic around your ponytail, but stop before your second to last loop.

+ Divide your ponytail into two sections (top and bottom).

+ Wrap the second to last loop around only the top section.

+ Then, wrap the last loop around the entire ponytail. This gives the top half a little boost in volume, making your hair look thicker!

+ These hacks are great, because they work well on both fine hair and short hair.

Use the double ponytail trick.

This one is probably best for those of us with long, fine hair. It’ll probably turn out a little funky on short, fine hair.

+ Divide your hair into two sections (top and bottom).

+ Create a ponytail at your desired height with the top half.

+ Divide the bottom half into two sections (left and right).

+ Layer the two bottom sections over the top ponytail and secure with another elastic.

+ Fan out the hair.

+ Layering the bottom hair over the top ponytail gives it the perfect boost.

HOT TIP: You can also secure the bottom half with a small claw clip.

Tease the roots.

Adding texture to your hair always helps with volume. For this method, you’ll need a teasing comb. Lauryn prefers a boar bristle teasing comb, which is perfect for both teasing up your hair and helping it lay flat.

+ Separate your hair into small sections.

+ Lift one of the sections up so you are working with the underside of the hair.

+ Beginning at the middle of the hair shaft, gently brush the hair up toward the scalp.

+ Repeat until you have achieved the desired volume.

HOT TIP: This can be done to the roots of your hair before you put it up, but you can also tease the base of your ponytail.

Use a volumizing product.

Using volumizing products are another fantastic way to get some texture into your hair, giving your hair a fuller appearance. Here are some of our favorites:

+ Oribe texture spray

+ Davines texture spray

+ Davines Volu spray

+ Dae Fairy Duster dry shampoo and texture spray

To use, follow the instructions on the product.

Go with a messier look.

This one’s always quick and easy, which we love.

+ Start with a normal ponytail slightly below your desired height.

+ Grabbing only some of the hair from either side of the ponytail, pull the hair apart to tighten the ponytail and fan out the hair.

+ Loosen the ponytail by gently pulling the hair at the root to add more volume to the part of your hair that’s tied up

+ You can repeat this process over and over to achieve your desired thickness.

This trick works best with kind of an edgy, rocker chick vibe probably not a clean girl aesthetic kind of style.

HOT TIP: Combine this hack with a volumizing product and some teasing.

Put a small clip in the middle of the ponytail.

For this method, you’ll need an elastic band and a small claw clip.

+ Put your hair up into a ponytail at your desired height.

+ Split your hair into two sections (top and bottom).

+ Place your mini claw clip underneath the top section, right where the sections separate.

+ Let your hair fall into place over the claw clip. Fan out if needed by gently pulling the sides apart.

HOT TIP: pick a hair clip that matches your hair color so that even if your ponytail becomes slightly askew, you’ve got a nicely blended look.

Flip your ponytail inside out.

This is another quick and easy hack for an immediately fuller-looking ponytail.

+ Pull your hair into a loose ponytail at your desired height.

+ Using your hands or the end of a comb, part the hair above the ponytail so there is enough space to pull the end of the ponytail through.

+ From above, reach through the space created by the part, and grab the end of the ponytail.

+ Pull it through and fan out the hair.

Use chunkier hair ties like scrunchies.

You’ll need a chunky hair tie for this one. Simply pull your hair up into a regular ponytail, but use the chunky hair tie instead.

We’ll be honest this one’s kind of hit or miss. When it hits, it’s absolutely on point. However, it’s easy for your thin hair to be overshadowed by the scrunchy. Make sure you choose a chunky hair tie that isn’t too chunky for your length and thickness of hair. This may take a bit of trail and error.

Here are some options for chunky hair ties:

+ Set of assorted sized scrunchies

+ Teleties silk scrunchies

+ Slipsilk skinny scrunchies

Sometimes the coil style hair ties can really give your ponytail a boost if you pay close attention to the way you ‘fan’ out your pony. This is also hit or miss, but when it works, it works!

Add curls or waves.

Our final hack is to add texture and volume to your hair through curls or waves. Straight hair can be sleek and elevated, but it can also fall flat from time to time. Adding some curl or wave to your hair can pump up your ponytail’s volume.

Check out this heatless curling set or use a curling iron to get the perfect curls.

If you’re looking for volume, you’ve found it.

These hacks are tried and true, so give them a go the next time you’re wanting to sport a ponytail. If you’re looking to strengthen, thicken and grow your hair, you have to try adding Beauty Water to your routine. It’s an efficient way to optimize your morning supplements. Lauryn chose the 3 best, most effective supplements and combined them into one convenient scoop for you. Electroylytes, pearl powder and colostrum work to help you hydrate properly, plump and strengthen hair, skin and nails, and renew every cell in your body.
