A 1984 fantasy film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is set to leave Netflix’s content library very soon. The film is a sequel to the 1982 sword-and-sorcery adaptation, centering on Robert E. Howard’s iconic creation.

Conan the Destroyer is leaving Netflix next month

From Friday, May 1, 2026, Netflix subscribers won’t be able to stream Conan the Destroyer on the platform.

The sequel takes place a few years after the events in Conan the Barbarian (1982). Following the loss of his lover, Valeria, Conan is hired by Queen Taramis for a dangerous mission. Although he is initially reluctant, the queen promises to revive Valeria in exchange for escorting her niece, Princess Jehnna, to retrieve a magical artifact. They are joined by a band of companions, including the fierce warrior Zula and the clever thief Malak.

Richard Fleischer directed the film with a story by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, and a screenplay by Stanley Mann. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, Olivia d’Abo as Jehnna, Grace Jones as Zula, Sarah Douglas as Queen Taramis, Tracey Walter as Malak, and Mako as Akiro, among others.

Like the original film, Conan the Destroyer’s earlier version had a lot of violence and even included a sex scene. However, producer Dino De Laurentiis believed that toning down the mature themes could help the sequel become an even bigger success. As a result, the filmmakers omitted several scenes from the final cut.

In a 1984 interview, Douglas said that her sex scene was not in the film, which she learned after the theatrical release. “There was a lot of grease and sweat and flailing legs. It was a good, raunchy scene,” she told PEOPLE.

Released on June 29, 1984, Conan the Destroyer received a negative reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 29% Tomatometer score and a 38% Popcornmeter score. Furthermore, the film managed to earn just over $31 million globally. In contrast, Conan the Barbarian had grossed $68.8 million.

Reportedly, the studio announced a reboot back in 2012 with Schwarzenegger set to reprise his role. While it took a while for the project to materialize, Top Gun: Maverick writer Christopher McQuarrie is currently working on a new Conan film titled King Conan. It will take place 40 years after the original film, bypassing Conan the Destroyer.
