Here is the discussion for this week:I help host a regular open board game meetup. Our meetup tries to be welcoming and is primarily aimed at people who like shorter, often more casual games. Partially, this is to attract newer players to our fun hobby. This is also because I prefer such games myself.
My question is: As a host, how do you balance being welcoming with playing games you don't enjoy?
I feel like the group I play with will have a better time if we are all enjoying it. And, though I can get through a non-fun-to-me game, I suspect that feeling lessens the enthusiasm I bring to the play experience of the whole group.

I do understand getting stuck playing a game you don't care for as it's happened to me as well.
However, you should be enthusiastic as a host when playing board games with people you've invited to play. Certainly you can express the games you want to play, but if the rest of the table wants to play something else, you need to be a polite and respectful host and agree.
When hosting, being a downer while playing a game is unacceptable in my opinion. Sometimes you have to suck it up to make sure everyone is having a good time. As a host, you don't get to dictate which games other folks play, just as if you were a player at a table with multiple people. Be positive and show enthusiasm, even if you don't feel it.
Best,
Ms. Meeple (Jennifer Schlickbernd)
P.S. If there's a situation in your board game group or at a meetup that you would like advice on, please send me a Geekmail with "Ms. Meeple" in the title.
