How can I find a large space in a major city to host weekly gaming events? As someone who hosts board game events, finding a space is the hardest part.
About a year ago, I started hosting Sunday events that struggled to get consistent attendance. People had a wide variety of game preferences, and the group was too small to consistently accommodate everyone's preferences. As a result, people would often stop showing up.
I've tried to make the events focus on specific types of games. However, this limits the variety of games that can be played. I prefer to have a larger event with a variety of games, and this would require a different space. Due to the layout of the current location, having a large event with at least thirty people is not a realistic option.
I used to play board games every week at a nearby underground mall where around 50-80 people showed up. It was a great experience since I could consistently find a game I wanted to play, and there were a variety of different types of games. Unfortunately, this mall and many of the other large low-cost/free public spaces are now closed or don't have enough seating.

A Los Angeles group I'm in meets at a church that rents out space on Saturdays. We've previously met in an Elk Lodge (until they decided to greatly increase the rent because of the number of people who came, at which point we left), we've met in banks, and a Petco is where we started. There are also board game stores that let groups play. Have you tried those choices?
And of course, you can always check Meetup to see where others are hosting or ask whether your group can join them.
I will say this: It's unlikely that you'll find a place for free. Each player pays $10 for our current set-up at the church.
