HBO Max’s most beloved comedy-drama is back for its fifth and final season, and Rotten Tomatoes critics are already running out of superlatives. The show’s creators and cast have delivered a swan song that has left reviewers reaching for perfect scores. With one calling it an all-time great and another declaring it simply “flawless,” the series ends on an undeniable high.

What critics are saying about Hacks Season 5 in reviews

Hacks Season 5 has drawn widespread critical praise ahead of its April 9, 2026 premiere on HBO Max. Newsday’s Verne Gay awarded the season a perfect 4/4, calling it “funny, melancholy, flawless.” TheWrap’s Matthew Creith described it as “a proper finale for a series that never stopped being funny, never punched below the belt, and always continued to evolve past its own perceived wokeness.”

The Age’s Kylie Northover gave the season 5/5, writing that “Hacks has always been a joyous mixture of silly physical comedy and farce with cultural satire, and this blend is stepped up a little for the final season.” RogerEbert.com’s Brian Tallerico called the show “practically flawless” and noted that the final season explores how lead character Deborah Vance will be remembered.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han offered a more measured take, writing that “ironically for a season that spends so much of its time concerned with the question of legacy, Hacks stumbles at crafting its own.” Tech Advisor’s David Opie awarded it 4/5 stars, writing that “Hacks will undoubtedly be looked back on as one of the all-time greats.”

Pop Culture Maniacs‘ Jean Henegan gave the season 4.7/5, saying she “walked away from the series finale laughing, crying, and satisfied.” The Contending’s Joey Moser called the show “biting, naughty, ballsy, fiercely intelligent, and, after this season, sorely missed.”

Hacks Season 5 gets a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes
