Recorded at Los Angeles’ The Record Plant over two day-long sessions in 1975, Montara saw Hutcherson take on covers of classic tracks like Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va” and Eddie Martinez’s “Little Angel”—it also featured Hutcherson originals like “Yuyo” and the title track.

Joining Hutcherson in the studio were the likes of Pias Johnson (flute); Oscar Brashear and Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Ernie Watts and Fred Jackson, Jr. (tenor saxophone); Eddie Cano (piano); Dennis Budimir (guitar); Chuck Domanico and Dave Troncoso (bass); and Harvey Mason (drums). Arrangements for the group were provided by Dale Oehler. Montara marked one of two Blue Note releases from Hutcherson in 1975—it was preceded by the studio album Linger Lane.

Launched in 2019, the Blue Note Tone Poet Series features jazz classics produced by the “Tone Poet” himself, Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio, and compiled on 180-gram vinyl. Each title in the series is handpicked from Blue Note’s extensive back catalog, which dates back to 1939. The series also encompasses releases from labels under Blue Note’s umbrella, including Pacific Jazz, United Artists, and Solid State.

Hutcherson’s Montara joins releases from the likes of Wayne Shorter, Stanley Turrentine, Duke Ellington, and Chet Baker. It’s also not the first Hutcherson album to join the collection—the Tone Poet Series has previously reissued multiple of his LPs including Oblique, The Kicker, and Dialogue, all of which capture rare sessions Hutcherson recorded across the 1960s.
