Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and its first Latin American leader, passed away this morning at the age of 88.

The Vatican confirmed his death at 7:35 AM local time at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.

His Holiness Pope Francis, the first Jesuit, the first pope from the Americas, and a relentless advocate for compassion, passed away in the early hours of the morning at the age of 88, according to an official statement by the Vatican.
