From the Publisher:

Cat-In-8 is an innovative cat-themed abstract strategy game that challenges players to outwit their opponents in a race to score points by aligning three or more cat tokens in a row. Drawing inspiration from the word “catenate”—to link things together—this clever title takes the concept of connection to new heights through its unique tile-shifting mechanics.

The game’s dynamic 4×4 grid is in constant motion, with players rotating, sliding, and rearranging tiles to create scoring opportunities while thwarting their rivals. Adding to the unpredictability are Chaos Cards, which introduce playful twists to the game. These special cards let players swap tokens, rotate tiles, or push rows to shake up the board and keep everyone on their paws.

For those skilled (or lucky!) enough to align eight cat tokens in a single row, the ultimate victory is theirs—immediately ending the game in a thrilling feat of strategy and chaos.

Whether you’re a fan of lighthearted competition or calculated maneuvers, Cat-In-8 delivers a perfect balance of thoughtful gameplay and chaotic fun. With its easy-to-learn rules, replay ability, and original artwork, this game promises an engaging experience for casual gamers, families, and seasoned strategists alike.

Review:

Initial thoughts:

When I first saw Cat in 8 I wondered if it was just going to be a glorified version of the Matching Game. I enjoy that type of game when playing with younger family members. Then I thought it would be more like Connect 4, another good game for a younger crowd. After taking a closer look at Cat in 8 I found out I was wrong. The game had more depth to it than I was thinking. There were ways to manipulate the board and you scored points throughout the game. Oooh, this just got interesting!

Rules & Setup:

The rule book is very comprehensive for the amount of rules in the game. Game Setup as well as Game Play are single pages each. The remainder of the rule book provides examples and an in-depth look at certain situations that may arise. It is also wonderfully illustrated so you don’t have to guess what piece / part is what.

Note:  Since this was a demo game it is likely the rule book was not in its final form.

The setup is super simple and not time consuming. Players randomly arrange the 16 Game Tiles in a 4 x 4 grid. The players determine if they are playing individually, in 2 – 4 player games, or as teams, in 4 – 9 player games. Team members must sit across from each other. Each player takes a cat type in their desired color, splitting the cats up between the team members for team play. The deck of cards is shuffled and each player is dealt 3 cards. Players pick a start player and play begins.

Theme and Mechanics:

Cat in 8 is a semi-abstract game where you are trying to get all of your cats in line, in a line of 8 to be specific. The game illustrations are extremely cat centric, which is very good if you like cats. There is plenty in which a cat would be interested.

The mechanic of the game is simply card based actions. Each turn you play a card, take the action, and then score points. In its simplest form it is a matching game with the tiniest bit of area control.

On a player’s turn they simply play and resolve a card, possibly score points, and draw back up to 3 cards. If a player plays a card with an icon on it, they place a cat token in an unoccupied space with the same icon. If a player plays a special card, the player performs the associated action by either sliding Game Tiles, rotating Game Tiles, or swapping cat tokens. Once those actions are complete, the player looks for the creation of lines of their cat token in sets of 3 or more and scores points based on how many cats are in the row. If a player (team) can get 8 cats in a row, it’s an instant win.

The game is very engaging. By nature it seems super simple, but by gameplay you have to think ahead and make strategic moves. Sometimes you don’t have a great move and will have to estimate what may happen and hope you make the correct choice. Many times changes to the board may open opportunities you didn’t have before.

What some may find issue with:

The game pieces can be a bit fiddly at times. Ghetti Games did a great job at making it easy to manipulate the Game Tiles, but if you aren’t paying attention and knock game pieces around it is not likely you will be able to put them back in the correct order unless you are very detail oriented. For example, one of the cards lets you swap 2 cat tokens, if you don’t pay attention to where they are and you pick them up you won’t be able to tell where to put them back down. The cards have a 1 to 1 match with all the icons, so if you mess up where they go back down, you will mess up the card matches.

I think this is a wonderful game for teaching basic strategy through games. It is simple enough to teach to a younger crowd but complex enough to teach them strategic thinking. Even for slightly older adults, this game kind of sneaks up on you and pounces like a cat. I don’t know if it’s just that I’m a cat person or not, but I found myself drawn into the game every time I played. Sometimes it was fun to just zoom around like a cat and then try to make connections. Other times I tried to play stealthy and then pounce on connections. I was never able to get the full 8 in a row, but that is a challenge I now face. I would recommend Cat in 8 for anyone with younger players that need to learn basic game strategizing, and to those who like Cats.

Thomas Shepherd – Reviewer

Grew up loving to solve puzzles, play games.  In younger years he had fun playing pencil games, playing D&D with friends, and hanging out with others. His favorite thing to do was to make puzzles, mazes, word games, picture games, etc. Sadly his career took him in a different direction. Gaming came back into his life, though, about 15 years ago & held onto it since. He enjoys designing games and has 9 published titles, through, Toresh Games. Sadly he wasn’t able to sustain the company. He would love to see a return to games as the best social media platform for the masses.
