Christy Carlson Romano is opening up about a pay gap on Even Stevens.
The actress says she earned half as much as co-star Shia LaBeouf while working on the Disney Channel series. In a recent Instagram post, she shared how finding an old letter brought that experience back while she was writing her memoir.
“I was a kid and the female lead on Even Stevens. I was paid half of what Shia was paid; we were co-leads and had the same screen time,” Christy wrote.
What Did Christy Carlson Romano Say About Her Even Stevens Salary?
The letter pictured in her post lists Christy‘s pay at $6,000 per episode and Shia‘s at $12,000.
Christy explained in her caption that her mother wrote to her agent in 2000 to ask for equal pay.
“While writing my memoir, I dug through thousands of old photos and letters and found this. My mom wrote it to my agent in 2000, asking for equal pay and admitting we were deep in debt,” she wrote.
What Did She Say About Her Family and Shia LaBeouf?
For Christy, the letter also brought up the pressure of helping support her family as a teenager.
“By then, my paycheck was keeping us afloat. My mom was fighting for me, and she was also fighting for a household that depended on a teenage girl,” she continued.
“It took me years to understand I could love her for advocating for me and still wish I had gotten to just be a kid.”
She also made clear that she wasn’t criticizing Shia for what he earned.
“Shia earned every dollar, and this book is not about him or any other famous name you might recognize. They were part of my story. They were never the story,” she wrote.
Her memoir, Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star, is out now.
