The Malcolm in the Middle reboot, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, officially debuts on Hulu this week. Critics have praised the show’s ability to travel back to the past in the right way.

What are critics saying about Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair?

On Rotten Tomatoes, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair debuted to a 79% score. While not the absolute best scores across the board, most critics praised the return to the iconic television show for its ability to present some nostalgia of the past in the right way.

Specifically, the show is being praised for its rather short episode count. With just four episodes in its revival, Life’s Still Unfair is being credited with not overstaying its welcome, and still managing to pack a ton of Easter eggs and other references for fans in those four episodes to make the show feel earned and fun to watch, while retaining the heartfelt nature of the original series.

Mashable’s Kristy Puchko, for instance, called the revival “more than a reunion or a reboot. This four-part miniseries is a joyful celebration of a great show, and terrific proof of concept that now is its time…again.” TheWrap’s Amber Dowling, meanwhile, also praised it as “a sweet, short and nostalgic trip down memory lane with plenty of Easter eggs for those who watched Malcolm in the Middle two decades ago, but it also feels fresh thanks to the balance of new faces.”

The upcoming revival sees several stars returning, including Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Bryan Cranston as Hal, Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, Christopher Kennedy Masterson as Francis, Justin Berfield as Reese, Emy Coligado as Piama, Franci’s wife, and more. Newcomers to the series include Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as Dewey, Anthony Timpano as Jamie, Hal and Lois’s fifth child, Vaughan Murrae, Keeley Karsten, Kiana Madeira, Craig Lamar Traylor, David Anthony Higgins, and Gary Anthony Williams.
