More than a decade after adapting Cinderella into a live-action movie starring Lily James, Disney is now officially developing another live-action film based on two fan-favorite Cinderella characters. The upcoming Disney project will be titled Stepsisters and follow the story of Cinderella’s evil stepsiblings, Anastasia and Drizella.

What do we know about Disney’s live-action Cinderella spin-off?

Per Deadline, the studio has enlisted Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers director Akiva Schaffer to helm the Stepsisters movie. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand have also been tapped to rewrite the screenplay written by Michael Montemayor. The live-action Disney movie will be based on the characters from the 1950 classic animated fantasy film and Charles Perrault’s 1697 French fairy tale of the same name. It is produced by Ali Bell for Party Over Here, with Disney executives Jessica Virtue and Cady Stark overseeing the film.

At the moment, further details about its plot, cast, and potential release date are still under wraps. In the original animated Disney movie, Drizella and Anastasia were voiced by Rhoda Williams and Lucille Bliss, respectively. Meanwhile, in the 2015 live-action remake, Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger played the evil stepsisters. Both versions showed the duo as spoiled and rude towards Cinderella.

Besides the Disney movie, Netflix is also working on an animated movie that reimagines Cinderella’s story from the perspective of her stepsisters. The project is being produced by Amy Poehler, with Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu leading the voice cast. Steps is slated to debut sometime in 2026, five years after it was first announced.
