New and old▪️ In early 2024, Eagle-Gryphon Games tried to crowdfund Cookie Champion, a new game based on elements of Rococo from designers Louis and Stefan Malz.

That project failed, so EGG re-vamped the comic book look of the game to a more classic Euro approach and is now crowdfunding the re-named La Pâtisserie Rococo for delivery at the end of 2025.

Here's an overview of this 1-5 player game that plays in 60–150 minutes:
Welcome back to the Rococo era! Louis XV reigns in France and is hosting a grand festival in the gardens of Versailles. Everyone is clamoring for you to provide tantalizing and delicious pastries for the event. This isn't just about your pâtisserie – it's about creating a presence at the most prestigious festival of the era that provides the chance to gain everlasting fame, prestige, and opportunities to gain favor with important nobles.

In La Pâtisserie Rococo, players represent the pastry shops (les pâtisseries) and pastry chefs (les pâtissiers) that are preparing pastries for sale and for show at the Versailles Garden Festival. Using the unique deck-building mechanism from Rococo, players hire staff to create recipes, acquire quality ingredients, and bake delicious desserts. Then comes the challenging decision of whether to sell these delectable creations for profit or present them for possible awards. The player who creates the most acclaimed desserts will gain fame and the respect of the king and his nobles.

I don't know about you, but I find it odd that EGG is (essentially) talking smack about its own Rococo: Deluxe Edition in the promotional material for La Pâtisserie Rococo:

"This new game costs less, comes with a solo mode, and has nearly three times as many unique staff cards!" Also, this chart relies on the "variability = replayability" fallacy that doesn't hold water.

▪️ Okay, let's see what else is on the gaming menu today, starting with Tricky Treats, a Q2 2025 release from Pedro Ometto and Cranio Creations for 2-4 players:
In the game, each player uses transparent cards to dress up their children in funny and colorful costumes by combining hats, tops, and bottoms.

Matching outfits can help you score points at the end of the game, but odd combinations can pull in different icons that will let you collect more sweets and play tricks during the game.

Once a player has visited eight houses, the game ends, with tricks activating endgame scoring mechanisms.

▪️ In December 2024, author and designer D.W. Vogel of Outland Entertainment crowdfunded Cupcake Dragon, a card game for players aged 6 and up in which — despite the name — dragons are not made out of cupcakes. So misleading!

In the game, players take turns laying down cards Mau-Mau-style, trying to collect loot so that they can attract a dragon at round's end. Cupcake cards are wild and have special abilities on them.

▪️ After all these sweets, maybe we need something a tad beefier, such as Order Rush!!, a card game from Vatcharis Thanomsub of publisher DNR Boardgame that is a freebie licensing tie-in with Burger King...but only in Thailand.

As the publisher explains on its Facebook page, you need to buy any Burger King menu item that includes Coke, Sprite, or Fanta for 489 baht, send the receipt via Facebook to Burger King Thailand to register for the game, then wait for it to be delivered to you.

Gameplay shows it to be a real-time, slap-down-the-cards design, but other than that, I'm at a loss. Even so, I'm impressed that the publisher has a tie-in game release with a large publisher. Maybe opportunities for something similar exist for designers in other countries...
