Emerald Fennell Explains Why 'Wuthering Heights' Movie Title is in Quotation Marks

Emerald Fennell is addressing the criticism surrounding her new movie “Wuthering Heights.”

Ever since the movie starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, many have taken issue that the movie doesn’t appear to be a true adaption of Emily Brontë‘s 1847 novel.

In a new interview, the 40-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker addressed the criticism and explained why the movie title is in quotation marks.

Keep reading to find out more…“The thing for me is you can’t adapt a book as dense and complicated and difficult as this book,” Emerald explained to Fandango. “I can’t say I’m making Wuthering Heights. It’s not possible.”

This could also explain why in the trailer, it says that the movie is “inspired by the greatest love story,” opposed to it being based on the book.

“What I can say is I’m making a version of it, she continued. “There’s a version that I remembered reading that isn’t quite real. And there’s a version where I wanted stuff to happen that never happened. And so it is Wuthering Heights, and it isn’t.”

“Wuthering Heights”
hits theaters on February 13. Watch the latest trailer here!
