A revised version of a sci-fi film has been made available on HBO Max, with the extended Assembly Cut now streaming. The updated edition presents a longer and altered version of David Fincher’s film, bringing back additional video and changes.

David Fincher’s Alien 3: The Assembly Cut now streaming on HBO Max

Alien 3: The Assembly Cut has been added to HBO Max, giving viewers access to an alternate version of David Fincher’s 1992 installment in the Alien franchise. The release brings renewed attention to a version of the film that differs significantly from the original theatrical cut and has gained a following over time.

Running approximately 144 minutes, the Assembly Cut is notably longer than the 114-minute theatrical version. It adds new scenes, extends existing ones, and provides a clearer context for certain story developments. It also gives more space to supporting characters. Some scenes also play out differently, including one where the inmates briefly contain the alien before it escapes again. The ending is presented without the chest-burster moment that was added during the theatrical version’s reshoots.

This version was not created as a traditional director’s cut. When the studio moved forward with a special edition for home video, Fincher chose not to participate. The Assembly Cut was instead put together independently. It was first released in 2003 as part of the Alien Quadrilogy DVD collection. Since then, it has been regarded as an alternate version that offers a more detailed look at the film’s story.

The film stars Sigourney Weaver, continuing the story of Ellen Ripley within the Alien. Set on a remote prison colony, the story follows Ripley as she confronts another alien threat with no weapons or modern technology.

The Assembly Cut joins other alternate editions from the franchise currently available on the platform. This includes Aliens: Director’s Cut and Alien Resurrection: Special Edition.
