Non-final cover▪️ German publisher Queen Games revealed part of its 2025 line-up in October 2024 when it ran a crowdfunding campaign for the next two titles in its "Stefan Feld City Collection": Chichén Itzá and Valencia, with the former being a new design from Stefan Feld and the latter being a revised version of Feld's 2011 game Strasbourg.

Here's an overview of Chichén Itzá, which could be summarized as Feld's take on a "troops on a map" design:
As the sun sets on the great Mayan empire, in the heart of Chichen Itza beneath the great pyramids and temples, ancient seals that once bound mythical creatures have been broken. The gods and beasts of legend — serpents of the sky, jaguar spirits of the underworld, and other beasts of lore — emerge from the forgotten realms to reclaim the world of mortals. Their siege is relentless, their power immense, as they descend upon the sacred city to consume its glory, but the people of Chichen Itza will not fall without a fight.

Mock-up at SPIEL Essen 24
In Chichén Itzá, you must command your forces, harness the favor of the gods, and fight the relentless tides of mythical beasts. The game lasts six rounds, with each player taking four actions during each round. During set-up, place 16 (of 21) action tiles in a 4x4 grid, then randomly place four cost markers along the top and side of the grid. If you're the first player to take an action in the round, you pay an amount equal to the lower of the cost markers to the top and side of the tile you choose; anyone who takes this action later in the round pays the higher of the markers. You can choose an action only once per round.

With these actions, you move troops, acquire god cards, upgrade your four combat gears, fight legendary creatures, and reclaim the villages, temples, camps and ruins that have been taken over. At the end of each round, you see whether you've completed particular achievements, and your score is based on creatures defeated, areas controlled, achievements met, heroes present, endgame god cards and crystals collected, and more.

▪️ Queen Games released minimal information about Valencia, other than noting that the game will feature a new two-player variant, a modular game board set-up, and new task cards and edifices.

Queen expects to fulfill both Chichén Itzá and Valencia to backers in Q3 2025 and says an early debut of the games at Gen Con 2025 might be possible.

▪️ Marrakesh: Gems & Experts, co-designed by Feld and Ulrich Fonrobert, is an expansion with six more modules that can be combined with Marrakesh and the 2023 Camels & Nomads expansion. Queen plans to crowdfund Gems & Experts in March 2025.

▪️ Star Explorer is a new international edition of Łukasz Szopka's Night Sky Explorers, which Polish publisher Lucrum Studio released in 2024. Players build constellations bit by bit on a rotating personal game board that they see only a quarter of at any one time.

▪️ Finally, Der Glückselefant is a 3-6 player card game in which you want to give one another thoughtful advice. Hmmm, quite different from the normal Queen offering! A short description:
Each round, one player presents a personal problem through a card. Everyone else now plays an advice card, after which the first player chooses the best advice from amongst the played cards.

As a twist on scoring, you want to keep your wins and losses in balance because only then will you be able to truly win the game!

So sometimes "thoughtful" advice will mean bad advice since you don't want to be too helpful. Perhaps you want to keep yourself from becoming a magnet to friends in trouble...

▪️ German publisher HeidelBÄR Games has revealed four titles in its 2025 line-up, all of which are German-language editions of games originating from other publishers:

The Eternaut from Mauro Chiabotto and Pendragon Game Studio, with this being a 1-5 player co-operative game about trying to survive life within a constant toxic snowfall based on an Argentinian comic series. (Chiabotto's design notes)

YRO from Masato Uesugi and Studio Supernova, which has you drafting cards from six guilds into a 3x3 grid to gain combat power, special abilities, and guild bonuses.

Railroad Tiles from Hjalmar Hach, Lorenzo Silva, and Horrible Guild, with players drafting tiles from a shared display to build valuable networks of cars, trains, and travelers. (My preview from Gen Con 2024)

Shinjuku from Gary Kacmarcik and リゴレ (rigoler), a 2-4 player game that works as follows:
In Shinjuku, a strategic network-building and pick-up-and-deliver board game, you build stores in Tokyo and the rail lines to connect them so that you can build the most successful shopping/rail conglomerate.

Every turn, new customers arrive on the map looking to purchase one of four goods. On your turn, you choose two different actions from: (a) build a store, (b) expand your rail, (c) upgrade to a department store, (d) draw cards as income, or (e) move customers along the rail to stores.

You start with a hand of four location cards and draw a new card each turn. The build, upgrade, and move actions require that you play a matching location card from your hand. Cards in your hand that match locations where you have previously built a store are wild and can be used to match any location.

The game ends one round after the last customer has been placed, and victory goes to the player who acquires the most sets of customers.
