Overview:
This beautifully crafted wooden game is designed for everyone, from ages 6 to 100. With its simple rules and elegant design, Foros is the perfect way to spark laughter, conversation, and friendly competition. LEARN TO PLAY IN 10 SECONDS: Take turns placing your pieces to get four in a row up, across, or diagonally. Thass all. You’re ready to play! As the game grows, so do your opportunities to win. It’s so simple, but your opponent has plans of their own. Will they foil your clever strategy? Play time 2-10 minutes. No tedious rules. Foros eliminates the frustration of lengthy explanations and gets the fun started immediately.
The Rulebook:
The publisher promises that you can start playing within 10 seconds and they are not far off. The rule book is laid out simply, walks you through a few different game modes but doesn’t stray far from the formula this game is built off of – simply get four in a row.
The book goes on however and that is where the beauty of the game comes out. The mode called “The Wall” plays out like Connect Four without the grid. Other versions introduce a circular structure or a grid to play on three-dimensionally. The goal remains the same – get four in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
The rulebook does a great job of exactly what a rulebook should do – get the game on the table and get the players interacting with the game.
One of the things I enjoy about this rulebook is the approach to having both experienced and younger gamers engaged. There is an alternate rule called out to have the experienced player call out “check” when they make a move that sets them up to win on the next turn. It’s a small twist that gives the younger player the opportunity to examine the board closer.
Finally, the rulebook presents alternative play methods using the same components in new ways. There are logic puzzles and designs to conquer to further the STEM approach to learning using the game.
The Play:
This one is as straight-forward as it gets – take turns placing your tokens in an attempt to get four in a row before your opponent. As play progresses, a player can also lose the game by trying to place pieces too high and causing a pillar to fall over.
The various game modes keep the game fresh, though at times harder to visualize. The game is one that typically ends up being set up for the next round immediately.
Components:
It is hard to say “this is where this game shines” because it does so many things right. That said, this game is beautifully crafted. One player will use natural wooden cubes while the other uses blue cylinders. The board itself is dual layered and plenty thick. All of this is presented in a way that shows excellent craftsmanship and obvious pride.
Thoughts:
Quite often a game billed as a “STEM” game is underwhelming and a lackluster attempt to get kids and family to engage in classroom-like activities. This game is well thought out and does a great job of being as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. When it was on our table, every game ended with clearing the board to play again.
Conclusion:
This one is easy to overlook and dismiss because it seems like that old game that everyone owns and no one wants to play. It has a place in most collections however, as it gives just enough to chew on to keep coming back to it.
I am a big fan of this game and it has a place in my collection. That said, I will say from an objective position that it will likely be pushed to the back of the shelf at some point as the variation just isn’t there for long. It can be addictive early on but can start feeling repetitive eventually.
Where this game will truly shine is in an educational environment. It should be on the shelf of classrooms, daycares and other education centers with game centers. It’s a great option to keep around for game gatherings where kids will be present and need a game of their own. The blocks serve themselves well as a toy for young children who want to be involved in the family game activities as well.
Simply put, Foros feels like that family game that every family has on the shelf somewhere and is full of fond memories from game nights. Given time, it will likely be remembered as just that.
