HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV show has run into a bizarre problem that the production team would never have anticipated, leading to the insertion of microchips into various props.

Why is the Harry Potter TV show putting microchips in props?

A report from The Sun reveals that the show is experiencing problems with people stealing props from the set, and the series’ bosses are “furious.” They are having staff actively scouring sites like eBay to find the missing items. According to the report, anyone caught stealing props will have their contracts terminated and be escorted off the Warner Bros. Studios.

In an effort to keep track of all the props, microchips have been inserted into spell books, broomsticks, pumpkins, and wands. The props were found missing by the crew during filming of a Halloween feast scene.

Various notices regarding the microchips have been discovered on set in Leavesden, Herts. “For inventory and security purposes, items are being tracked daily, and movements of props will be logged,” reads the notice. “If you need to take any props off set or away from its designated area, please seek approval from the Props Department first.”

HBO’s upcoming show stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Professor Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape, a decision that has sparked considerable controversy, including an SNL skit.

At the time of writing, no official casting for the series’ antagonist, Lord Voldemort, has been announced. While many actors, including Lord of the Rings alum, have expressed their interest in the role, Warner Bros. has yet to confirm or deny any actor’s involvement.

The first Season of Harry Potter will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in Christmas 2026. The series has already been renewed for a second Season, which will adapt the second book, The Chamber of Secrets.
