One of HBO’s most-watched comedies is officially coming back for a second season.

What HBO comedy is getting renewed for a second season?

Rooster, the comedy series led by Steve Carell and from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, is officially getting a second season. HBO announced the news, while also confirming the show is on pace to become the most-watched freshman HBO comedy in over a decade.

Rooster follows the story of an author and his complicated relationship with his daughter, played by Clive. According to HBO, the series averaged 5.8 million viewers across its first four episodes, which are currently airing on HBO and available on HBO Max. New episodes of the 10-episode season premiere on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO, and are available on HBO Max after.

Alongside Carell, Rooster stars Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai. The series is set on a college campus, and will follow an “author’s (Carell) complicated relationship with his daughter (Charly Clive).”

Rooster comes from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and collaborator Matt Tarses. This is Lawrence’s newest project since his 2024 show Bad Monkey, which is currently working on its second season for Apple TV+. Ted Lasso, another show Lawrence created, is also in development of a fourth season.

The show also marked Carell’s latest major TV project after recently signing on to star opposite Tina Fey in the Netflix series The Four Seasons, as well as his role in Mountainhead, the 2025 film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong.
