Renowned video game creator and cinephile Hideo Kojima recently reviewed Supergirl. He shared his thoughts on social media, likening its premise and themes to an iconic Western movie. Accordingly, he brought a unique perspective to the early reviews for the movie. The latest DCU film recently premiered in theaters, drawing a mixed response from both critics and fans.

The Metal Gear creator shared his review of Supergirl on social media, confirming he saw the latest DCU film in IMAX.

On X (formerly Twitter), Kojima stated, “It wasn’t a ‘superhero movie’ about saving the Earth through self-sacrifice as ‘justice’ confronts ‘evil.'” He added that it was a coming-of-age story about Kara saving herself and how she struggled with her trauma.

Kojima further stated that on a structural level, it felt less similar to Mad Max: Fury Road, whose characters were motivated “purely by survival instinct beyond notions of good and evil” and more like Clint Eastwood’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, “where heroes, villains, and scoundrels all converge.”

As of this writing, Supergirl shows a 56% rotten critical score and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many critics appear to agree that Milly Alcock’s portrayal of the titular character is the film’s most successful aspect. However, other issues within the movie divided reviews.

Rachel Walshe of Film Ireland wrote that fans looking for a fun action movie with a “good soundtrack and well-acted cast” will enjoy it. However, she added that while it is “good,” it could have been “great.”

Meanwhile, SuperHeroHype’s Matt Morrison called the movie “a worthy entry in the DCU canon” and noted that it is “better paced and more engaging” when compared to its source material, the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

On the other hand, Brian Eggert of Deep Focus wrote in his review that “The writer and director fail to deliver the goods, leaving Supergirl, yet again, with an underwhelming adaptation from page to screen.”

Supergirl is currently playing in theaters.
