In the wake of James Van Der Beek‘s passing at the age of 48, fans are revisiting one of his most iconic big-screen roles: 1999′s football drama, Varsity Blues.

The fan-favorite sports film stars James as Jonathan “Mox” Moxon, the reluctant quarterback who steps up to lead his Texas high school team under the pressure of a ruthless coach, played by Jon Voight. The movie became a late ’90s staple, and remains one of his most quoted performances.
