For an event on Monday, May 19, Lopez added a surprising touch to that signature beauty formula: ultra-bold purple eye shadow.

The shadow was a genius choice where color theory is involved, as Lopez was wearing a monochromatic, textural peach-on-peach ensemble. Because the two shades sit on opposite sides of the color wheel, they provide a truly gorgeous contrast yet remain soft and romantic.

Lopez's longtime makeup artist Scott Barnes was behind the bold shadow, brushing a suite of plum and rich violet shades across her lids. Instead of a fully matte formula, Barnes opted for a shimmery shadow to keep the eye looking bright and lively. He then defined the shadow with lots of black eyeliner, drawing on a slight cat eye and blending the color under her lower lashline. As for the rest of Lopez's glam, well, that J.
