Some Grammy winners celebrated their big moments from the comfort of their own homes.
While Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and more stars stepped out at the 2025 Grammys, Jon Batiste and wife Suleika Jaouad, whose film American Symphony, won two awards, opted to watch the festivities from home after sharing that her cancer had returned.
“On this lazy Sunday, life is good,” Suleika captioned a joint Instagram post on behalf of the couple Feb. 2. “We’re so honored to win the Grammy for Best Music Film (and also for Song Written For Visual Media too!). We couldn’t make it to the ceremony but we’re beaming love from our couch to yours, and sending gratitude to all who made this film possible.”
Just weeks before the big night, the writer disclosed her diagnosis as she looked back at her ups and downs in 2024.
“When you learn for the third time you have cancer, it’s easy to feel hopeless,” she wrote on Instagram in December alongside snaps from throughout the year. “But my photos showed me that even in the hardest moments, there were so many joys. That life is not a monolith. That our forever work is to learn to hold the brutal and beautiful in the same palm.”
They weren’t the only stars who skipped the Grammys this year. André 3000, who was nominated for several awards for his New Blue Sun album, announced the day before the big event that he would be unable to attend—although he did not provide a reason for his sudden absence. (His album's biggest nod, Album of the Year, was ultimately awarded to Queen Bey for Cowboy Carter).
Unsurprisingly, Travis Kelce—who has been dating Taylor for over a year—was also not by the “Fortnight” singer’s side for the event as the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and his team prepare to take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX Feb. 9, in what could be a history-making game.

But while the Grammys are the music industry’s most prestigious event, stars have been known to skip out on the evening before.
Last year, Drake, who received four nominations for Her Loss, missed the ceremony due to his touring schedule. The year prior, Lady Gaga missed the big night despite being nominated for her Top Gun: Maverick track “Hold My Hand,” as she was on location filming Joker: Folie à Deux in New York.
In some cases, stars have even intentionally skipped out due to their own principles. In 2017, Frank Ocean opted to sit out of the Grammys and even forwent submitting his critically-acclaimed albums Blonde and Endless for nomination consideration. (Ocean previously received six nominations for 2012 album Channel Orange, ultimately winning two.)
“I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated,” the singer told the New York Times at the time. “It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”
