Emilia Pérez Oscar Nominee Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Offensive Tweets

Another past controversial social media message allegedly posted by Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón has been unearthed ahead of the 2025 ceremony.

According to an image of a Twitter exchange published by the Latin Times Jan. 31, the actress insulted Selena Gomez two years before they starred together in Emilia Pérez, while commenting on a news story debunking rumors of a feud between the fellow actress and Hailey Bieber, who married her ex Justin Bieber in 2018.

"She's a rich rat who acts like a poor wretch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," Karla allegedly wrote in Spanish October 2022 on the social network, which rebranded to become X in 2023, in response to an article published in Mexican newspaper Reforma about Selena and Hailey posing for their first public photos together.

E! News has reached out to reps for Karla, who deactivated her X account Jan. 30, and Selena for comment and has not heard back.

The alleged social media post is one of several controversial messages that Karla allegedly shared in the past that appeared to target Muslims, the killing of George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars, all of which have been resurfaced by social media users in recent days, ahead of the March 2 award show.

The 52-year-old, the first openly trans performer to be nominated for an Academy Award at this year's show, has already apologized for making controversial remarks on social media—all of which have reportedly been deleted and which have not been independently verified by E! News— without confirming specific offensive comments.

"I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt," Karla said in a Jan. 30 statement to NBC News via a Netflix spokesperson. "As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain."

On Jan. 31, Karla shared another apology. "The first thing I would like to do is to sincerely apologize to all those who have felt bad about the way I have expressed myself at any stage of my life," she wrote in Spanish on Instagram. "I cannot repair my past actions, I can only say that today I am not the same person as 10 or 20 years ago."

She suggested that some of the quotes attributed to her were not real. "They have created posts as if it were me, insulting even my colleagues," she continued, "things that I wrote to glorify as if they were criticism, jokes as if they were reality, words that without the background only seem like hate."

Last week, Karla denied reports that alleged she insulted fellow Oscar Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres, without specifying where she was accused of making the comments.

"I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie," Karla said in a Jan. 21 video interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. "However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine."
