Live-Action Moana’s Runtime May Be Shorter Than Originally Reported

The runtime of Disney’s live-action Moana may not be quite as long as the initial listing suggested. It pointed toward a two-hour screening. But a more recent update from the studio itself offers a different number. The discrepancy, though modest, has drawn attention as the July release date approaches.

New report says Moana has a shorter runtime than what was originally reported

The uncertainty began when AMC Theatres published its advance booking details. The major US chain listed the Moana live-action runtime at 120 minutes, a length that would have made the remake a full 13 minutes longer than the 2016 animated original. That number spread across fan forums and entertainment sites, shaping expectations for a substantially expanded story.

Days later, ScreenRant reported a different duration. A Disney representative told the outlet that the official Moana runtime stands at one hour and 51 minutes, or 111 minutes. That is nine minutes shorter than the AMC listing, though still four minutes longer than the first animated movie and 11 minutes more than the 2025 sequel. AMC has not revised its page; as of publication, it continues to show 120 minutes.

If the 111-minute count is accurate, the live-action Moana still becomes the longest one in the franchise. The additional four minutes compared to the 2016 film leave room for modest additions, perhaps a scene extended to suit live-action staging or a brief new sequence.

The pattern fits Disney’s recent approach. The 2025 Lilo & Stitch remake added 23 minutes to its animated predecessor. Several other live-action adaptations have run slightly longer than the originals.

Directed by Thomas Kail, the film brings Dwayne Johnson back as Maui while introducing Catherine Laga’aia as Moana. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the character in the animation, works as an executive producer. The story follows the familiar beats of the 2016 film. Moana, chosen by the ocean, leaves Motunui to find Maui and restore balance to her world. The live-action remake will be released in cinemas on July 10.
