Earlier this month, LP Giobbi shared her remix of Bob Marley and The Wailers’ “Could You Be Loved,” reimagining the 1980 classic over a pulsing house beat. The remix helps to celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Wailers’ album Uprising, the final full-length released during Marley’s lifetime. Exploring themes of redemption, peace, and religion, Uprising remains a favorite among Marley’s fans and popular across the world—even King Charles counts “Could You Be Loved” among his personal favorite songs.

LP Giobbi is one of the many people who loves Marley’s work. Having previously worked with such diverse acts as Diplo, Dead & Co, and Sofi Tukker, Giobbi is no stranger to bringing different genres and sounds together to create something entirely new. uDiscover recently caught up with Giobbi over email to discuss the remix and what the music of Bob Marley means to her.

What sort of relationship did you have with Bob Marley’s music before the remix?

I don’t remember discovering him because he was being played in my house since before birth. But I do remember learning that his music was made to promote peace, unity, resistance to oppression, and Pan-African identity. It drew me in because of how good it made me feel on the surface. To then learn that there was a greater purpose for it felt life-changing. Just to know that that combination could exist made me – and continues to make me – feel alive.

What was it like to remix this track, in particular?

A bit scary considering what a legend he is and what an incredible song this is. When approaching a remix I tend to try and use the least amount of vocals possible, but that felt sacrilegious in this case.

What was the most surprising thing about the process?

The placement and spacing of the vocal flows so naturally while listening to it, but his chorus vocal falls on a different beat than my memory was recalling. I had to go back and listen to the original several times to convince myself I had it wrong. That was a fun discovery.
