Big shifts are coming to Doc as the show reshapes its cast ahead of the next season. Key exits, fresh additions, and possible returns signal a new phase for the hospital drama.

Who is leaving Doc as a series regular and permanently?

One of the biggest changes in Doc involves Charlotte Fountain-Jardim, who plays Katie. After becoming a regular in Season 2, her role will now be reduced. The character is heading to college, which means she will appear only occasionally going forward. She will still return in guest appearances when needed, keeping her connection to Amy’s story alive.

Meanwhile, Felicity Huffman is exiting completely after her Season 2 arc. She played Dr. Joan Ridley, a mentor figure whose storyline was always planned as a one-season journey. Her character’s illness and eventual death were part of a defined narrative, giving Amy an emotional turning point.

“We always knew that she was going to come in, she was going to be sick and hiding her illness, and by the end she would die in some heroic fashion, in a way that would be cathartic for Amy,” Steinberg told Deadline.

Doc’s new joinee and returning actor revealed

Looking ahead, Blair Underwood is stepping in as a major addition for Season 3. He will play Dr. Ben Grant, a trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon. His role is expected to bring a new dynamic, especially since the show lacked a central surgical figure before.

Creators said his character also shares a past with Amy. “So it felt like a cool way to add that element into the show through a character who has a past with Amy. It feels fresh,” Steinberg explained.

There is also a chance fans could see Scott Wolf return again. His character, Dr. Richard Miller, left after a dramatic redemption arc, but the door has not been fully closed. Steinberg said they are open to bringing him back if it fits naturally into the story.
