Marvel Studios has to pay a hefty fine over a San Diego Comic-Con promotional stunt this year. Marvel wrapped the Gaslamp Quarter’s landmark arch in an Avengers: Doomsday installation to promote the film. This prompted the city of San Diego to fine Marvel Studios and its advertising partner Elevue Outdoor a hefty $160,000.

As reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, the city also issued an additional $48,500 fine for other wraps around buildings during the convention. “The contractor knowingly created a safety risk and refused to address it and was cited and fined accordingly,” said Richard Berg, a San Diego spokesperson. According to the report, San Diego code enforcement officials warned the advertising agency not to proceed with its promotional plans, citing safety concerns.

Marvel returned to Hall H at Comic-Con this year following a hiatus after its 2024 panel. To promote Doomsday, the studio adorned several locations around the convention with Doctor Doom’s costume colors. The enforcement officials fined Marvel even before Comic-Con started, giving the studio ample chances to reverse its marketing decisions.

Why Marvel is betting so much on Avengers: Doomsday

Despite facing a hefty fine, Marvel Studios appears to be unfazed. The studio is focused on ensuring its upcoming ensemble is its biggest ever. Doomsday will be Marvel’s first Avengers film since 2019’s blockbuster hit Avengers: Endgame. The upcoming film will reunite the New Avengers with the Fantastic Four and X-Men. It will also bring back faces from Marvel’s previous phases, including Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

The upcoming film’s trailer garnered over 503 million views in under 24 hours, almost becoming the most-viewed trailer of all time. The film’s pre-sales already outgrossed the combined pre-sales for its 2025 releases in just two hours. The film’s marketing cycle is entering full swing following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Avengers: Doomsday is on track to release on December 18, 2026.
