Netflix is denying a story that claims the streaming service had considered pulling the docu-series Michael Jackson: The Verdict before it ever was released.

The series is a three-part look at the 2005 criminal trial of Michael Jackson and his complex legacy, told by key players who were inside the courtroom. The pop star was acquitted of all charges, including molestation, during the trial.

The docu-series premiered on June 3 and spent weeks at the top of Netflix’s charts.

Sources claim Netflix had cold feet about the series

An insider told Variety that Netflix considered dropping the series to avoid a lawsuit from MJ‘s estate.

“It was the fear of a lawsuit from the estate rather than the fans. [Netflix] was really scared of their financial muscle,” the source said.

Ultimately, they decided to run it because it “would have been very embarrassing to pull the series after you drop the trailer — it would have been a huge story.”

Netflix denies the claims

A spokesperson for Netflix spoke out in response to the story.

“Characterizations that Netflix reconsidered the release or changed course because of outside pressure are inaccurate. The series launched as planned and reached the Netflix Top 10 for three weeks,” the rep said in response to Variety‘s article.

Michael Jackson fans are clearly supporting his projects these days.
