Netflix has shared the first Wayward clip from its newest thriller drama, which hails from creator and star Mae Martin. The limited series is scheduled to make its sometime this year.

“The series is a thriller set in a bucolic but sinister town that explores the insidious underbelly of the ‘troubled teen industry’ and the eternal struggle between one generation and the next,” reads the logline.

What happens in the Wayward clip?

The video features Suits alum Patrick J. Adams‘ character, who introduces Hereditary’s Toni Collette as the youth counselor of the Tall Pines Academy which is described as a place for troubled teens. Besides Martin, Colette, and Patrick J. Adams, the ensemble cast also includes Sarah Gadon, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Sydney Topliffe, Brandon Jay McLaren, Joshua Close, and Patrick Gallagher.

Wayward is created and executive produced by co-showrunner Martin, who’s also leading the ensemble cast. Heartstopper director Euros Lyn has also signed on to helm four episodes. The 8-episode series is executive produced by co-showrunner Ryan Scott, Lyn, Ben Farrell, Hannah Mackay, Jennifer Kawaja, and Bruno Dubé.

This marks Martin’s latest collaboration with Netflix after working together in the short-lived dramedy series Feel Good and in Martin’s comedy special Mae Martin: SAP which debuted last 2023.

“We are deep in the bizarre world of Wayward, and I am so excited to show everyone what we’ve been making — what a cast!” Martin said when the project was first announced (via Tudum). “I hope this show ignites the rebellious teenagers that exist in all of us. And, most importantly, let’s acknowledge that my hair is now several shades darker than previously, indicating that I am now in fact a serious actor.”
