The Law & Order franchise is facing another potential setback following the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime. With the spinoff ending after five seasons, Christopher Meloni appears to be stepping away from his long-running role as Elliot Stabler. His recent remarks have fueled speculation about the character’s future in the franchise.

Christopher Meloni seemingly bids goodbye to Elliot Stabler

Christopher Meloni appears to be stepping away from his long-running role as Elliot Stabler following the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime after five seasons. With the series ending, the decision marks a significant shift in his involvement with the Law & Order franchise, in which he has portrayed Stabler across multiple shows since 1999.

Reacting to the development, Meloni reflected on the character’s journey and the fans that supported it over the years. “I just saw that they announced Organized Crime won’t be coming back. I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back,” he said.

The actor described his time portraying Stabler as a rewarding experience. Meloni said, “It was a great ride. Thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of, nearly 17 odd years.” Meloni first rose to prominence as Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, in which he starred alongside Mariska Hargitay. He later reprised the role in 2021, leading Law & Order: Organized Crime while also appearing in crossover episodes across the franchise.

In addition to leading the spinoff, Meloni made guest appearances in both Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the flagship Law & Order series. Given that the character has also appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the update raises the possibility that Meloni may not reprise the role in that show going forward.
