The prospects of a Super Smash Bros. crossover movie got a disappointing update from Nintendo and Illumination executives despite the sprawling cinematic Super Mario animated franchise. The Super Mario Bros. Movie made over a billion dollars at the global box office.

Its follow-up, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, features several characters from other Nintendo properties. However, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri made it clear during a new interview that this doesn’t necessarily mean a Nintendo Cinematic Universe is imminent.

Miyamoto and Meledandri discussed the chances of a Super Smash Bros-style crossover movie during an interview with Polygon following the confirmed debuts of characters such as Pikmin, ROB, and Fox McCloud. They clarified that they were focusing on what’s immediate. Miyamoto said, “Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series.”

The veteran Nintendo designer proceeded to explain that while working on the latest movie, he once again realized how “varied” and “multi-talented” the Mario cast is. Miyamoto added, “We have plenty of characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a little bit of secret cameos here and there. And you’ll see that there’s one secret character that plays a big role. So I think there might be introductions of characters like this potentially in the future, something like that.”

Meanwhile, Meledandri detailed that the process they utilize to make these movies isn’t geared toward developing an interconnected fictional universe, but figuring out “what would be fun within a certain scene.” He elaborated that the entire thing is more “incidental” than “strategic.”

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuts today, April 1, in US theaters.
