Noah Wyle Addresses Rumor He Auditioned to Play Ross Gellar on 'Friends'

Noah Wyle is setting the record straight on his career before ER.

In a new interview with Variety published on Thursday (April 9), the 54-year-old Emmy-winning actor, who currently stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on The Pitt, addressed the long-standing rumor that he auditioned for the role of Ross Gellar on Friends in the early ’90s.

“I had a little snobbery about doing TV,” he admitted.

Also in the interview, Noah looked back at his finding his way onto to TV with ER, which he initially mistook for a movie when he first received the two-hour pilot script.

“I thought it was a movie, so I auditioned for it,” he recalled. “When I found out it was a show, I didn’t really care, because I thought, ‘It’s so good, they’re going to cancel it. There’s no way this is going to last.’”

“But I kind of turned my nose up at the idea of a television career, which is ironic, because that’s exactly what I’ve enjoyed for the last 30 years,” Noah continued. “I love what I thought would be constricting. I found I love the consistency, and what I thought would get boring, I’ve managed to find infinite complexity. And instead of having variety, I’ve found family.”
