norda 001 trail runner review

The norda 001a is a durable and well-cushioned trail runner that breaks the mold in terms of construction, feel, and durability. It’s made with the best-of-breed components, including a virtually indestructible Woven Dyneema upper, an Arnitel TPC foam midsole, and a Vibram Megagrip Elite outsole. The resulting super shoe is designed to last two to three times longer than existing trail runners. What’s the catch? They’re twice as expensive ($295) as other trail runners.

  • Gender: Men’s and Women’s
  • Cushion: Moderate-to-Max
  • Stack height: Heel: 26mm, Forefoot: 21mm
  • Drop: 5mm
  • Weight: 332g / 11.8 oz in a size US men’s 10.5
  • Uppers: Woven Dyneema
  • Midsole: Arnitel TPC foam (which does not require a rockplate)
  • Outsole: Vibram Megagrip
  • Sizing: Runs a 1/2 size small
  • Pros: Excellent durability, moderate-to-max cushion, great grip, durable midsole, very lightweight, water-resistant
  • Cons: Very expensive, little padding in uppers, drains poorly if immersed, not as breathable as mesh

Trail Runner Durability – the ugly truth

The problem with most trail runners is that they wear out too quickly, often after less than 250 miles of use. Old school leather hiking boots, in comparison, could last a thousand miles or more and had outsoles that could be replaced approximately every 500 miles of use. Sadly, few such boots are made anymore, nor are there cobblers left who could replace their soles.

Today’s trail runners, made by Hoka, Altra, Saucony, La Sportiva, etc., tend to break down in several places.

  • The mesh uppers wear through above the big toe or at the crease at the back of the toe box along the sides of the shoe.
  • The foam midsole compresses with use, providing less bounce and foot protection.
  • The outsoles wear down prematurely, particularly when worn on rock or pavement.

These norda trail runners are designed to address all of these problems and provide longer-lived footwear. While you still have to discard them when they’re worn out, more durable footwear fills landfills more slowly.

Woven Dyneema Uppers

The norda 001a upper is made from a single piece of Woven Dyneema fabric without any seams or panels. Woven Dyneema is a fabric made with Dyneema fibers, which are 15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float on water. Dyneema is used to make luggage, climbing rope, backpacks, and other products that are ultralight and highly abrasion-resistant. Woven Dyneema fabric is even stronger because the adjacent and perpendicular fibers reinforce one another. It’s a remarkably versatile material, well-suited for making footwear due to its lightweight nature and exceptional durability.

Unlike existing trail runners, the 001a’s uppers are seamless, eliminating much of the friction that can cause blisters, but maintaining a suppleness that conforms to the shape of your foot. The uppers are also surprisingly thin and unpadded, which helps explain the shoe’s light weight. For example, there’s no extra padding along the sides or heel, and very little padding in the tongue.

The toe box is wide so your toes can relax and splay out.The toe box is wide so your toes can relax and splay out.

Fitwise, the 001a is clearly intended to fit like a sock, and while close, it doesn’t quite hit that mark. The toe box is wide, allowing your toes to splay out. The middle of the shoe is slightly narrow, while the heel is snug with a little padding below the cuff. Despite this, the heel cuff lies flush with your socks, blocking any trail debris from entering. The 001a’s don’t have any facility to add gaiters, and in my experience, they’re simply not needed.

Protection

Notably absent on the 001a are the extra rubber bumpers common on trail runners, which protect the front of and sides of the shoe from impacts. While there is the tiniest of front toes kicks in front of the big toe, this lack of protection gave me pause when I first tried on the 001a. I quickly came to realize that this protection is provided by the sides of the outsole along the front, rear, and sides of the shoes, which extend beyond the perimeter of the uppers and give the 001a a slightly clownish appearance. The protection reminds me of the bumpers you’d find on old carnival bumper cars. I’ve hiked hard with these trail runners on some of the rockiest trails and mountains in New England without any discomfort or painful impacts, which isn’t something I can say about the other trail runners in my shoe closet.

Midsole

The norda 001a’s midsole, the layer between the uppers and the outsole, is made with Arnitel TPC foam, a thermoplastic polyester elastomer engineered to have excellent rebound properties and fatigue resistance. With use, most trail runner foams lose a substantial degree of rebound and the cushion they provide, often within the first 50-100 miles of use. Other manufacturers address this by increasing the stack height of their shoes or by creating midsoles with two layers of foam separated by a stiff carbon plate. This explains the popularity of maximum cushion shoes and the use of rock plates in trail running footwear.

norda took a different approach, engineering a foam compound that returns more than 80% of the athlete’s energy without the need for a higher stack height or carbon plate. This results in significantly lighter-weight footwear and midsoles that maintain their rebound over the long term, upwards of 250 miles.

The glove-like fit of the 001a upper helps keep your foot properly position over the midsole when climbing or descending steep rock ledge.

Trail Feel

Despite the impressive engineering that’s gone into the norda 001a midsole, they can feel mushy if you’re used to a harder midsole or lower stack height. While norda classifies the 001a as having moderate cushion, they feel like a maximum cushion shoe to me. That said, the 001a feels like you’re walking on air, which is a distinctly pleasant sensation that reduces fatigue. However, I’d steer clear of them if you’re accustomed to a zero-drop trail runner and prefer the enhanced trail feel that zero-drop trail runners can offer.

Vibram Megagrip Outsoles

The Norda 001a comes with Vibram Megagrip outsoles that provide excellent traction on both wet and dry surfaces, so you’re less likely to slip, whether the ground is wet or dry. They deliver strong grip on mixed terrain, performing well on rock, dirt, mud, and pavement. Compared with very soft rubbers, Megagrip wears more slowly while still maintaining good stickiness, so the soles last longer. The compound works across a wide temperature range, staying tacky in cold conditions without becoming overly soft in warmer weather.

Recommendation

The norda 001a is a thoughtfully engineered trail runner that addresses the three weakest links in modern trail shoes: flimsy uppers, midsole breakdown, and rapid outsole wear. Its seamless Woven Dyneema upper delivers exceptional abrasion resistance and a glove-like fit, the Arnitel TPC midsole preserves rebound and cushioning far longer than typical foams, and the Vibram Megagrip outsole gives confident traction across mixed terrain. The result is a very lightweight, highly protective shoe that feels like walking on air while lasting significantly longer than most competitors.

Who should buy them

  • You hike or run frequently on mixed terrain (rock, dirt, occasional pavement) and want a shoe that lasts — even if that means paying more up front.
  • You prioritize long-term value, low replacement frequency, and durability over minimal initial cost.
  • You like a roomy toe box, substantial cushion (moderate-to-max), and a 5mm drop

Who should skip them

  • Budget-conscious buyers who replace trail shoes every season and don’t need extra longevity.
  • Runners who need lots of upper padding or maximum breathability (the Dyneema upper is less ventilated and lightly padded).
  • Zero-drop purists who prefer a raw, ground-hugging trail feel — the 001a leans toward plush.

Bottom line: If you’re willing to invest $295 for superior materials and longer useful life, the norda 001a is an excellent choice. It delivers standout durability, long-lasting midsole rebound, and reliable grip in a very lightweight package—making it one of the best options for regular trail users who want fewer shoe changes and better long-term value. If price or maximum breathability is your top priority, consider alternatives, but for durability and comfort on varied trails, the 001a is hard to beat.
