Curry Barker just landed an eight-figure deal for a secret new horror film. The Obsession filmmaker reunites with major studio partners for an original feature.

Curry Barker’s third movie lands at major studio, James Wan and Jason Blum attached

Curry Barker has secured his next major film deal, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reports. Universal Film Group and Blumhouse Atomic Monster landed Barker’s third feature in a rich eight-figure deal. The filmmaker will write, produce, and direct an original horror project for the studio partnership.

The deal keeps Barker within the Universal family after a breakout year. Focus Features, a Universal label, released his debut film, Obsession, earlier this year. Focus also stands behind his already shot second feature, Anything But Ghosts, which he wrote, directed, and stars in.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster has maintained a growing relationship with Barker across all three projects. The company came aboard Obsession after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It also served as a production entity on Anything But Ghosts.

Roy Lee and Steven Schneider’s Spooky Pictures will also produce the new film. Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath’s Divide/Conquer, behind The Black Phone and Heart Eyes, round out the producing team. All story details remain secret, though the project stems from a pitch Barker made directly to Universal’s top brass.

NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley praised the filmmaker in a statement. “Barker’s talent is redefining what’s possible, and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with him,” Langley said. Obsession has become a pop culture phenomenon since its May 15 release.

The film has earned four consecutive weekends bigger than its $17.2 million opening. It became Focus Features’ highest-grossing release of all time and is tracking to surpass $300 million worldwide. Focus originally acquired the film out of TIFF after it was made independently for just $750,000.

“They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of,” Barker stated. Wan and Blum added that Barker “made something wholly original that connected with a massive audience.” Universal Film Group will distribute the new feature worldwide.
