USA's Alysa Liu Wins Gold Medal, Ending a 24-Year Drought for Americans in Women's Single Skating

Alysa Liu just brought home another gold medal for Team USA!

The 20-year-old figure skater came in first place for the Women’s Single Skating during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games on Thursday (February 19) in Milan, Italy.

Last week, Alysa won a gold medal during the Team Event and now she has added a second gold medal to her collection.

The single skating competition combined the scores from the short program and the free skate program. After the short program, Alysa was in third place, but she delivered an incredible performance in the free skate that pushed her to first place with a total score of 226.79 points.

Japan took home the other two medals with Kaori Sakamoto receiving silver and Ami Nakai getting the bronze medal.

This marks the first time that Team USA has taken home the gold medal in this event since 2002, when Sarah Hughes won. Sascha Cohen won the silver medal in 2006 and no American has received a medal in this event in the years since then.

Alysa‘s teammate Amber Glenn got a huge surprise from a music icon earlier this week.
