Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayWhen she was 23 weeks pregnant, Ashley Kollme was told that her baby had a congenital heart disease. Kollme was referred to Sibley Memorial Hospital and later to the Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center, where the care team created a plan for her delivery. Baby Sophia, affectionately called Sophie, was born at Johns Hopkins and had her first open-heart surgery at 7 days old. She was diagnosed with truncus arteriosus, a condition that occurs when blood vessels coming out of the developing baby’s heart fail to separate entirely, leaving a connection between the aorta and pulmonary artery. Sophie had a very complex case, and was in the hospital for 83 days. The Johns Hopkins Children’s Center care team included Kollme in the daily rounds and made sure that she was involved in Sophie’s care, and the team combined their expertise to ensure that Sophie and her family were cared for.
