PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) can help prevent HIV after a possible exposure—but starting quickly matters. Learn when to seek care, how to take the 28-day course, possible side effects, and why follow-up HIV testing is essential. Think you may have been exposed to HIV? Don’t wait for symptoms. Contact a healthcare provider, urgent care, or an emergency department right away. PEP should begin as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours after exposure. This brief Rehealthify explainer covers how PEP helps stop HIV from establishing an infection, why completing treatment matters, and what to do if side effects such as nausea bother you. PEP is not a guarantee of protection, and follow-up testing remains essential. The video also explains the distinction between emergency PEP and asking about PrEP for ongoing HIV prevention.
