Review:

Overview:

I’ll be honest—Primalgard TCG caught my attention almost immediately, and not because I’m a big trading card game player… but because I’m not.

Growing up, my friends were all into Magic: The Gathering, but by the time I finally had the money to jump in, they had already moved on. So I mostly missed that whole world. Because of that, I’ve always been a little on the outside looking in when it comes to TCGs.

That’s what made Primalgard interesting to me—it looks like a game that actually invites new players in, without losing what makes the genre fun.

Rules & Setup:

Shuffle the deck and play, it’s really that simple! But don’t take my word for it check out the how to play video and/or the playthrough below:

Theme and Mechanics:

The world of Primalgard is split between two main groups: Denizens and Guardians, and this is honestly one of my favorite parts of the game.

Denizens are all human characters, but what makes them stand out is how they represent different generations of people. One example is a millennial teenager, and I really liked how these characters don’t just stay static—they can evolve, or more accurately acclimate, into stronger versions as the game goes on. It gives them a sense of progression that feels thematic instead of just mechanical.

Then you have the Guardians—and these were easily my favorite.

They’re all animal-based characters, and they hit that perfect nostalgic note for me. They reminded me a lot of cartoons I grew up with like Thundercats, Street Sharks, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That humanoid-animal style just works, and it gives the game a really unique identity compared to more traditional fantasy TCGs.

Mechanically, things stay pretty streamlined:

  • Play creatures
  • Manage your resources
  • Build your board and apply pressure

It doesn’t feel overcomplicated, which honestly works in its favor.

Gameplay:

From the playthrough, Primalgard looks fast—and I mean that in a good way.

Turns move quickly, you’re building your board almost immediately, and there’s very little downtime between players. You’re either setting something up or reacting to what your opponent just did.

What stood out to me most is how quickly the game gets going. You’re not waiting several turns to feel like you’re actually playing—you’re in it right away.

As someone who hasn’t really played TCGs before, this felt approachable without feeling shallow. There’s still decision-making in how you play your cards, when you commit, and how you respond.

The best way I can describe it is this:
It feels like a more stylized Pokémon, mixed with a bit of Star Realms and Summoner Wars.

That combination gives it a familiar feel, but without being overwhelming.

Artwork and Components:

This is easily one of the biggest highlights.

The artwork is bold, colorful, and instantly recognizable. Ten Hundred’s style gives Primalgard a personality that really separates it from other TCGs.

Even just watching gameplay, the cards pop. They feel cohesive, energetic, and honestly just fun to look at.

If the physical version delivers on this, it’s going to be a very eye-catching game on the table.

The Good:

  • Fast, engaging turns with almost no downtime
  • Very approachable for non-TCG players
  • Strong, unique art style that stands out
  • Guardians bring a great nostalgic feel
  • Gets you into the action quickly

The Other:

  • May feel a bit light for hardcore TCG players
  • Long-term depth will depend on card variety and balance
  • Digital play doesn’t fully represent the physical experience

Final Thoughts:

Primalgard TCG feels like a game that knows exactly what it wants to be—and more importantly, who it’s for.

It’s fast, approachable, visually bold, and doesn’t try to overwhelm you with complexity. Instead, it focuses on making sure you’re having fun right away.

For me personally, this is the kind of TCG that feels like it finally opens the door. It has that familiar DNA from games I’ve watched others play for years, but presents it in a way that actually makes me want to jump in.

If you’ve ever felt like you missed the TCG train the first time around, Primalgard might be your ticket back on.

And honestly? The Guardians alone almost sell it.

I can’t wait to get back on Tabletop Simulator and play it again, anyone care to join me?

Players Who Like:

Pokémon, Star Realms, Summoner Wars, fast-paced dueling games, nostalgic cartoon-style characters, and anyone curious about TCGs but unsure where to start.
