Following the first film’s box office success, is Project Hail Mary 2 in development? A sequel to Ryan Gosling‘s sci-fi movie recently received a surprising update.

What is the surprising Project Hail Mary 2 update?

Last weekend, Project Hail Mary opened to $80.5 million in North America, the second-highest for a non-franchise, non-sequel movie in a decade. Project Hail Mary is now past $100 million domestic for a worldwide total of $155 million and counting.

The sci-fi movie is on its way to becoming Amazon MGM Studios‘ highest-grossing movie. With any hit, studios are always trying to see how to leverage the property down the road.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Project Hail Mary sequel “isn’t out of the question.” No official conversations have started between Amazon MGM and author Andy Weir about Project Hail Mary 2. The original sci-fi movie is based on Weir’s 2021 novel. Though Weir has never written a sequel, THR reports that Weir is “toying” with sequel ideas, but nothing is official.

In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up in a spaceship with no memory of how he got there.

“As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of a mysterious substance causing the sun to die out,” the official synopsis reads. “He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction. But an unexpected friendship means he may not have to face this impossible challenge alone.”

Besides Gosling, Project Hail Mary stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct Project Hail Mary based on a screenplay by Drew Goddard. Producers include Lord, Miller, Gosling, Weir, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor.

Project Hail Mary is now in theaters.
