As the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 2 finally hits theaters, fans are seemingly feeling nostalgic. The 2021 reboot that started this new era is experiencing a massive resurgence on streaming, fighting its way back up the charts just in time for the sequel’s debut.

Mortal Kombat claws back on streaming charts amid sequel release

According to Flix Patrol, Mortal Kombat has muscled its way into the top 10 movies streaming on HBO Max. The R-rated video game movie currently sits at the number 6 spot, surrounded by titles like Wuthering Heights, Marty Supreme, The Devil Wears Prada, Crazy Rich Asians, and The Mummy. This streaming spike is a sign that audiences are revisiting the l world of Earthrealm before diving into the new one, which releases today, May 8, 2026.

The 2021 movie, directed by Simon McQuoid, was a hard reboot for the franchise. The martial arts fantasy follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter hunted by the cryomancer assassin Sub-Zero.

Unaware of his hidden lineage, he seeks out a clique of fighters chosen to defend Earthrealm against the forces of Outworld. The film starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Now, the wait for Mortal Kombat 2 is officially over. The sequel brings back fan-favorites, including McNamee, Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Lewis Tan. Damon Herriman also returns, though this time in a different role. New additions like Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle round out the cast, with Jeremy Slater penning the screenplay.

While the 2021 film received a mixed response, Mortal Kombat 2 is currently the best-reviewed one in the franchise’s history. It holds a Tomatometer score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes and 90% on Popcornmeter. Critics have specifically commended the high-octane action scenes, visceral combat, and crowd-pleasing fan service.

The original Mortal Kombat video game was created by Ed Boon and John Tobias, spawning a multimedia franchise that has endured for over three decades.
