One day after losing her defamation case against Rebel WilsonCharlotte MacInnes filed an appeal challenging the dismissal. The news comes after Justice Elizabeth Raper dismissed MacInnes’ lawsuit against her The Deb co-star, Wilson. The lawsuit was first filed by MacInnes in 2024 over Wilson’s social media posts about her experience working on the film.

Charlotte MacInnes Appeals Federal Court Ruling in Rebel Wilson Defamation Case

In the original lawsuit, MacInnes claimed that Wilson’s posts portrayed her as dishonest, implying that she had withdrawn a sexual harassment complaint against the film’s producer, Amanda Ghost. MacInnes also denied ever making the sexual harassment complaint in her defamation case. On Wednesday, Raper ruled that Wilson’s posts were not defamatory and did not harm MacInnes’ professional reputation.

A report from Variety has revealed that MacInnes’ representatives launched an appeal after losing the defamation case against Wilson. According to the notice of appeal, MacInnes is challenging the Federal Court’s findings and has asked the Full Court to set aside the resulting ruling. The appeal also argues that Raper erred in assessing the evidence and interpreting the meaning of Wilson’s social media posts published between September 2024 and July 2025.

If the Court does not enter judgment in her favor, MacInnes will seek a new trial by a different judge. She is also seeking to overturn the order to pay Wilson’s legal fees after losing the defamation case. In her appeal, MacInnes also raised procedural fairness arguments, claiming that Justice Raper did not give her the opportunity to address her factual findings during the trial.

It remains to be seen whether the Full Court will move forward with MacInnes’ appeal.

Following significant delays due to the lawsuit, The Deb will be released on Digital on August 25, 2026. It will be released in the UK one day before that via Vertigo Releasing.
