Resident Evil is about to hit theaters, and the first reviews are in!

The new horror movie comes from Weapons and Barbarian director Zach Cregger and stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who finds himself fighting to survive as one horrifying night descends into chaos.

What Are Critics Saying About Resident Evil?

Critics are largely praising the movie’s scares, gore and humor, with Austin‘s performance also receiving plenty of positive attention.

The Guardian gave the movie four out of five stars, praising its relentless pace and saying that “the tension and entertainment value never flag.”

The Film Maven gave the movie a B, highlighting Austin Abrams‘ performance and calling the movie a “scary, breathless, and downright hilarious good time.”

Variety also gave the movie a positive review, describing it as a “sweetly executed piece of escapist trivia” and noting that it has a quirky relatability that works within the Resident Evil franchise.

The A.V. Club gave the movie a B, praising Zach Cregger for taking the franchise in a “winningly focused direction” that is “funnier, meaner” and, at times, smaller in scale.

IndieWire gave the movie a B+ and praised how Zach blended the worlds of movies and video games, writing, “This is I.P. cinema with vision and verve.”

TheWrap called the movie “an explosive horror experience” and praised it for capturing the unusual tonal balance of the video games, beginning as something terrifying before becoming increasingly ridiculous.

The Hollywood Reporter praised Zach for making the movie his own while remaining faithful to the source material, calling the finished product a “propulsive, simultaneously terrifying and hilarious thrill ride.”

Consequence gave the movie a B+, describing it as Zach‘s most straightforward horror movie yet and praising his ability to deliver effective jump scares.
