Meindl Salo Mids

The Meindl Comfort Fit Salo Trail Mid is a specialized, Italian-crafted hiking boot designed to address a common, often painful issue for hikers: the need for more room in the forefoot for wide feet or bunions, without compromising heel stability. With a price point reflecting its premium materials, this mid-cut boot blends “Old World” craftsmanship with modern, lightweight materials suitable for day hiking and backpacking.

  • Country: Made in Italy
  • Height: 6.5″
  • Weight: 2 lbs 8 oz / pair
  • Uppers: Suede / Mesh
  • Waterproof/Breathable: Gore-Tex
  • Sizing: Size down a full size
  • Resolable: Yes

Wide Forefoot/Narrow Heel Design

The Salo Trail Mid is built using Meindl’s Comfort Fit last and features a wider toe box and increased volume around the ball of the foot, allowing the toes to splay out naturally. Unlike many “wide” shoes that feel sloppy throughout, Meindl couples this spacious forefoot with a snug, secure heel pocket. This design prevents internal sliding and blistering while offering superior comfort for those with or even without bunions or wider feet.

The Salo Trail Mid

The upper is constructed from premium, durable suede leather, paired with mesh, for a blend of toughness and ventilation. It stands roughly 6.5 inches tall, offering solid ankle support without the rigidity of a full hiking boot.

Cork Insole

Meindl is known for its out-of-the-box comfort, and the Salo Trail holds fast to this. A key component is the specialized cork insole, which molds to the user’s foot’s unique contours over time. This insole is four-part: a cork footbed, a Poron shock absorption layer at the heel, a PU foam section in the arch, and full-length memory foam. This creates a stable, rather than “pillowy,” sensation. While some might prefer a softer, running-shoe feel, the firmer, supportive nature of this insole helps prevent foot fatigue on uneven, rocky, or root-strewn surfaces.

Performance and Stability

The Salo Trail Mid is a surprisingly capable mid-height boot that excels on rough terrain thanks to its aggressive tread. It has a full Gore-Tex lining, ensuring 100% waterproof and breathable protection, keeping feet dry through streams, dew-covered grass, and rain. The mid-cut ankle provides stability on uneven terrain without restricting movement.

Durability and Craftsmanship

Handcrafted in Italy, the quality of construction is immediately apparent. The suede is durable, and the rubber toe rand provides essential protection against rocky obstacles. Unlike many modern hiking shoes, the Salo Trail is designed to be resoleable, significantly increasing its lifespan.

Sizing

The Salo Trail Mid runs about a full size large, and I need to wear it with my thickest REI wool socks to shim out the extra interior room. Taking the time to get the correct size is essential for the comfort of the Comfort Fit to actually be realized, as a too-short or too-long boot will negate the benefits of the wide toe box.

Pros:

  • Extremely Spacious Toe Box: Ideal for wide feet, bunions, or just natural splaying.
  • Exceptional Comfort: The cork insole adapts to the foot’s shape.
  • Out-of-the-Box Ready: Requires minimal to no break-in time.
  • Waterproof & Breathable: Effective Gore-Tex lining.
  • Durable & Resoleable: High-quality Italian craftsmanship.

Cons:

  • Sizing Inconsistency: Requires careful sizing (usually 1/2-1 size down).
  • Firm Sole: Some users may find the sole and insole too firm, though this helps on rocky ground.
  • Price: As a high-quality, Italian-made product, it is a significant investment.

The Bottom Line

The Meindl Comfort Fit Salo Trail Mid is an outstanding choice for hikers who struggle to find comfortable, wide-fitting footwear that still provides proper ankle support and traction. The combination of the spacious toe box, supportive insole, and reliable, waterproof construction makes it a premier choice for long-distance trekking and day hikes. If you are willing to navigate the sizing, it is a premier, long-lasting investment for your feet.
