Mountain Hardwear Cloud Cipher Jacket Review

The Mountain Hardwear Cloud Cipher Men’s 3L Rain Jacket is a technical rain shell designed for hiking, backpacking, and general mountain travel. It sits between ultralight shells and heavier alpine jackets, offering solid weather protection without feeling overbuilt. After use in rain, snow, wind, and cool conditions, the Cloud Cipher comes across as a practical, well-made waterproof/breatahble jacket with a clear focus on function.

  • Gender: Men’s and Women’s
  • Type: 3L Waterproof/Breathable
  • Seam-taped: Yes
  • Fit: Athletic
  • Fabric Body: DrySpell 20D 3L: 100% Nylon
  • Features: Two-way zipper, one-way adjustable hood with brim, pit zips, hip-belt compatible pockets, elasticated cuffs, hem adjustment
  • Packable: Yes

Fabric and Weather Protection

The Cloud Cipher uses a 3-layer waterproof/breathable construction with a durable outer fabric and a protective inner lining. In steady rain, the jacket does its job reliably. Water beads on the surface and does not soak through. Seam taping is consistent, and there are no obvious weak points around the shoulders, hood, or zipper.

The fabric has a moderately sturdy feel. It is more substantial than thin ultralight rain shells, but it is still flexible enough for regular movement. It handles contact with brush and backpack straps without any immediate signs of wear, making it suitable for longer trips and repeated use.

Breathability and Comfort

Breathability is reasonable for a fully waterproof shell. During moderate to high output, some moisture buildup is unavoidable, but the jacket manages heat and humidity better than many shells in this category. The pit zips are effective and easy to operate, allowing extra airflow when climbing or moving quickly.

The interior feels smooth against base layers and does not become uncomfortable when worn for extended periods. The jacket works well across a range of temperatures, especially when combined with appropriate layering underneath.

Fit and Mobility

The fit is on the athletic side without being tight. There is enough room to layer a midweight insulating piece underneath, but the jacket does not feel baggy. Articulated sleeves and a well-shaped torso allow for natural movement, whether hiking uphill, using trekking poles, or scrambling over uneven ground.

Sleeves are long enough to keep wrists covered during movement, and the elasticated cuffs seal effectively over gloves. The hem length provides adequate coverage without interfering with a pack hip belt.

Hood and Adjustments

The hood is helmet-compatible and feels a bit large when worn without one. However, it adjusts easily in the rear and stays in place once set. The brim offers basic structure and helps keep rain out of the eyes, though it is not especially stiff. I wear a waterproof Outdoor Research billed Seattle Rain cap in extended rain to augment the bill coverage and keep water off my glasses.

Pockets and Layout

Pocket placement is practical for backpacking. The hand pockets are positioned high enough to remain accessible while wearing a hip belt. That’s rare on rain jackets sold in the USA. They are large enough for gloves or small items and provide good protection from rain. The zippers feel solid and operate smoothly.

Weight and Packability

The Cloud Cipher is not an ultralight jacket, but it packs down to a manageable size for a 3-layer shell. It fits easily in a backpack and does not feel cumbersome to carry. The slightly higher weight reflects its more durable fabric and construction.

Overall Assessment

The Mountain Hardwear Cloud Cipher Men’s 3L Rain Jacket is a straightforward, dependable rain shell for people who spend a lot of time outdoors in wet weather. It offers consistent waterproof performance, reasonable breathability, and a comfortable fit without unnecessary design flourishes. It may be more jacket than occasional users need, but for regular hiking and backpacking, it provides a balanced mix of durability, comfort, and protection.
