Rab Incline Light Pants Review

The Rab Incline Light Pants are purpose-built for hikers and backpackers who demand maximum performance in hot, demanding conditions. Weighing in at just 8.1 ounces, these ultralight pants excel at thermal regulation in cool to hot weather with a single-layer weave that vents moisture and provides sun protection.

  • Weight: 8.1 oz (Men’s 36 x 30″)
  • Gender: Men’s (reviewed) and Women’s
  • Closure: Double metal snap and YKK zipper
  • Pockets: 4, all zippered and mesh interiors for added ventilation
  • UPF: 30+
  • Material: 93% nylon/7% elastane, PFAS-free

Construction and Materials

At the heart of the Incline Light Pants is Rab’s Matrix fabric, a lightweight single-weave nylon/elastane blend that strikes an impressive balance between durability and breathability. The four-way stretch construction ensures unrestricted movement, while the lightweight weave promotes exceptional airflow. The fabric’s construction provides surprising abrasion resistance for such a light material.

The pants feature a clean, athletic cut that eliminates excess material without feeling restrictive. Pre-curved knees enhance mobility during high-step moves and scrambling. The legs taper down to the calves for a clean look. Flatlock seams throughout minimize chafing, a crucial consideration for multi-day adventures in hot climates.

Hot Weather Performance

The Incline Light Pants truly excel in thermal management. The Matrix fabric’s structure creates excellent airflow that actively moves warm air away from the body, while the lightweight construction prevents heat buildup that plagues heavier hiking pants. If you hold the pants up to the light, you can see through them, an indication that the weave is good at venting excess heat and moisture.

The fabric’s quick-dry properties shine when hiking through wet vegetation and crossing streams. Moisture wicks rapidly to the surface, where it evaporates efficiently, keeping you comfortable as conditions change throughout the day.

Practical Features

Despite their minimalist design, the Incline Light Pants don’t skimp on functionality. Two zippered hand pockets provide secure storage for small essentials, a zippered thigh pocket offers quick access to navigation tools or snacks, and a rear zippered pocket is good for holding your wallet during town resupplies.

The waistband features a double-snap closure with a YKK zip fly, complemented by low-profile belt loops. I wear these pants with a 1.5″ wide Arcade Atlas elasticated belt and don’t experience any slippage or pressure points under a backpack hip belt.

Sizing

The Rab Incline Pant is available in standard waist sizes and short, regular, and long inseams. I prefer a short inseam length on my hiking pants, so I appreciate the range of options available.

The pocket interiors are lined with mesh for added ventilation. The pocket interiors are lined with mesh for added ventilation.

Bottom Line

The Rab Incline Light Pants represent an excellent choice for hot-weather hiking, trail running, and technical scrambling where weight and thermal comfort are paramount.  The exceptional breathability and mobility make them ideal for summer alpine adventures, desert hiking, and any situation where keeping cool takes priority. At their price point, these pants deliver outstanding value for serious outdoor athletes who refuse to be slowed down by heavier, heat-trapping pants.
