Sun protection and fabric
The star of the show is the UPF 50+ sun protection that’s built into the fibers and won’t wash out. The supersoft 92% polyester/8% spandex knit strikes a sweet spot, lightweight, stretchy, and comfortable next to skin, while wicking sweat efficiently and drying fast between sessions on trail or water. Compared to flimsy rash guards or heavy cotton hoodies, this fabric breathes better, manages moisture, and withstands multi-day use.
Hood design that works
Many sun hoodies miss on the hood; this one doesn’t. Unlike the Sahara, most sun hoodies don’t have adjustable hoods and don’t keep the sides of your head or your forehead from getting burned. The 3-panel hood has an internal drawstring (shown above – below the chin) that lets you cinch it for a secure seal without flapping, and the crossover front extends coverage at the neck and upper chest, prime zones for sunburn on exposed ridgelines and during midday paddles. It layers smoothly over a hat and stays in place when you’re moving quickly or in gusty conditions.
The REI Sahara Shade Hoodie also makes a great mid-layer on a chilly morning.Trail-ready fit and features
Raglan sleeves provide full shoulder mobility under a pack, and thumbholes keep sleeves anchored over the backs of your hands for extra UV coverage while backpacking. The silhouette is relaxed but not baggy, making it an easy base or standalone layer next to your skin. At 9.4 oz in a men’s large, the Sahara Shade Hoodie is light enough to carry as your dedicated sun layer and warm enough to use as a summer mid-layer under a rain shell.
Thumb loops provide protection for the back of the handsPerformance in heat and on water
For hot, high-output days, the moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabric helps prevent that swampy feel and cuts evaporative chill when the wind picks up. On water, it functions like a more comfortable, less clingy rash guard with better hood coverage. On the trail, it replaces a baseball cap-neck cape combo with a single piece that actually protects your ears, neck, and collarbone.
