Review:
Star Wars: Unlimited- Galactic championship held in Las Vegas.
In a city Far Far Away from not only the winner of the entire event but for most competitors was the inaugural Star Wars : Unlimited TCG Card game tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada on a balmy late July weekend.
While your shirt would stick to your back if you venture out to the strip for some lively activity given the dessert heat, the competition was even hotter with a game that is fresh to the scene and taking the competitive TCG gaming circuit to the next level- out of this world and into the Star Wars IP Universe.
Though there has been a number of iterations of a Star Wars Card trading card game from the early customizable card game in 1995 to the Young Jedi card game in 99 and a game designed by Magic the Gatherings creator Richard Garfield that never caught on, called, you guessed it: Star Wars Trading Card Game. Though the fist in this list had some stay power, the others collapsed faster than an early rebellion rally at the town cantina.
With the launch of Star Wars: Unlimited, players of all ages can learn and play this well crafted and mechanically sound experience.

In full transparency, I was hired by Asmodee and Fantasy Flight Games through a solid and well run events coordination company Merchants Guild to help teach the game to the young and old at the event. My goal was to simply immerse myself into this community of truly welcoming individuals and boy what a world I explored.
The tournament hosted over 2000 competitors – an explosion onto the TCG scene larger than the Death Stars take down of Alderaan. The magnitude of such an event required the efforts of hundreds of passionate players and professionals to set up, manage, and broadcast every moment of the long weekend.
Here is the Championship link to see for yourself:
If you have ever had that exhilarating feeling when you tear open a booster pack of any trading card game to find that Ultra Rare Foil print, you will appreciate that this event hosted that energy from opening day right on through the final match late Sunday afternoon. Lines of players from across the world landed to showcase their deck building prowess to sit atop the throne as Emperor of the game. That rank was awarded to Filip Szkudlarek from the beautiful country of Poland.
The real value and future of this game lies in its community of players. Unlike a few very large successful TCG games that will remain anonymous for this piece, almost every player has fun and friendly competitive natures. Even the hardcore competitors making it to the final rounds, all showed grace and respect for the game and opponent sitting across from them in this 1 v 1 experience.
The age range at the event span from 4 to 74 and the engagement into this beloved IP proved that Star Wars is still favorable among all generations.
The valuable elements of this event extended beyond the frontier of competitive play which gave the occasion a real homey feel, like Aunt Beru’s cooking on Tatooine. Mmmm the smell of boiling Bantha Blue Milk!

You could start your galactic journey at the Learn-to-Play area that introduced you to all the mechanics of play, card layouts, and key terms from the start. From there you hyper jumped Over to the starter pack open play area where you were given a small pack of cards pre generated to ensure you would get a full game experience. Finally, if you felt so inclined, one could travel light speed over to the competing area of the extremely large convention hall of the Venetian ( in the heart of the Vegas Strip ) to deploy your chosen leader and have a BLAST!
This opinion on the vibe of the players and tournament was solidified when one realizes that after 3 days of rigorous mental grinding of strategies against numerous constructed decks and play styles that the champion won- NOTHING, well a palm sized trophy and a rubber play mat. But that was it – no major loot, cash, booty, Nothing! Just the bragging rights after months of practice and strategic game play – just bragging rights.
After finishing my duties and departing the vast wasteland of Sin City, I felt there was a moment in time where Vegas blossomed with life of communion and growth in humanity. Over a card game? No, over commonality that ignored the duality of today’s political and social deconstruction of society. This community thrives and proves that at least for now, today, this galaxy’s 3rd rock from the sun is not far, far, away from civility but rather united in a love for science fiction and being present at a table sharing moments with other bi-pod humanoid at the inaugural Galactic Championship of Star Wars Unlimited. Join the rebellion, and attend next year’s event- the recruitment is on!
