Steven Spielberg praises Obsession and Backrooms

Veteran director Steven Spielberg praised two of Hollywood’s latest horror films, Obsession and Backrooms.

At the screening of his upcoming film, Disclosure Day, which is expected to compete with both Obsession and Backrooms, Spielberg praised the two new horror sensations. The veteran director also lauded the films for being made for “very little money.”

“I’m so happy for them. I think it’s so fantastic,” Spielberg said during his red carpet appearance at the premiere. “I think it’s great that they had basically very little money, especially Obsession had under $1 million, and the other film had maybe 10 or nine, and they’re doing so well, and I just applaud them. I haven’t seen Backrooms; I am going to see it when all this is over. But I have seen Obsession, and I loved it.”

Obsession premiered in theaters on May 15 and has since enjoyed a brilliant run. It has already become Focus Features’ highest-grossing stateside release, grossing $151.3 million. It follows a music store employee who buys a supernatural toy that grants him his wish for his friend Nikki to fall in love with him. The results are harrowing. It stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette in the leading roles.

Meanwhile, Backrooms has already made a record with $81.4 million domestic and $118 million worldwide. It is also directed by A24’s youngest-ever director, Kane Parsons, who is only 20 years old. It is based on the Backrooms creepypasta, which has been an online phenomenon for years. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

Disclosure Day premieres on June 12, 2026.
